Exploring John 1:37–39
In the Gospel of John, Jesus interacts with two of John the Baptist’s disciples. This exchange provides insights into discipleship and the call to follow Christ. Let’s explore these verses together and reflect on their meaning for our spiritual journeys.
The Encounter:
“The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, ‘What are you seeking?’ And they said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come and you will see.’ So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.” — John 1:37–39 (ESV)
What Are You Seeking?
Jesus’s question, “What are you seeking?” is both simple and profound. It goes beyond the immediate context and speaks to the heart of every believer’s journey. It challenges us to reflect on our desires, motivations, and what truly matters to us. Are we seeking truth, meaning, or a deeper relationship with God?
For the two disciples, the question prompted them to acknowledge their desire to learn from Jesus. They addressed Him as “Rabbi,” expressing their readiness to follow and be taught. Jesus’s response, “Come and you will see,” is an invitation to experience firsthand the life-transforming power of following Him.
The Invitation to Follow
The phrase “Come and you will see” is more than just an invitation to physically follow Jesus to His dwelling. It symbolizes the beginning of a journey of faith, discovery, and transformation. Jesus invites them, and us, to walk alongside Him, to learn, and to witness the wonders of His teachings and actions.
This invitation is open to everyone, regardless of where we are on our spiritual journey. It encourages us to take the first step, to be curious, and to seek out the truth that Jesus offers. In following Him, we are invited into a relationship where we can grow, learn, and be transformed by His love and grace.
Reflecting on Our Own Journey
As we reflect on this passage, let’s ask ourselves the same question Jesus posed to the disciples: What are we seeking? Are we open to the invitation to follow Him and see where it leads? Are we willing to spend time with Jesus, to learn from Him, and to be transformed by His presence?
